Airborne applications

What is airborne infrared imaging?

Airborne infrared imaging requires multiple cameras with different wavelengths. The airborne platform is a manned rotary or fixed wing aircraft, an unmanned UAV/UAS or even a balloon or blimp.

To compensate and correct for shocks and other motions, gyro stabilization over multiple axis is applied to the infrared camera platform: a gimbal. The integrated infrared cameras can be equipped with fixed focus or zoom lenses. There are several different types of infrared cameras available:

  • SWIR (ShortWave InfraRed) to penetrate fog and smoke, to see through camouflage colours and patterns and to detect gun flashes;
  • MWIR (MidWave InfraRed) for long range thermal surveillance applications;
  • LWIR (LongWave InfraRed) for thermal imaging applications, such as search & rescue (SAR), border surveillance, enhanced vision (pilot assistance), targeting, reconnaissance, etc.

What is airborne infrared imaging used for?

Airborne infrared imaging is a method to detect and map a wide variety of events using airborne infrared imagers.

R&D and Industrial applications

  • High voltage powerline inspection
  • Industrial surveys
  • Detection and inspection of natural geothermal activity
  • Detection and inspection of volcanic ash clouds
  • Detection of certain vegetation and minerals
  • Detection of forest fires

Safety & Security applications

  • Law enforcement tasks
  • Anti-poaching
  • Border surveillance
  • Search & rescue operations (SAR)
  • Military reconnaissance to search and track vehicles, vessels or dangerous unexploded ordnance (UXO

Some of these applications are also referred to as remote sensing, imaging spectroscopy or hyperspectral imaging.

What do we offer?

For airborne infrared imaging applications we offer our XenicsCores. These infrared OEM modules cover the entire infrared wavelength range and combine a lot of features for an easy integration into your system.

OEM infrared modules

The XenicsCores - our OEM infrared modules - are small, lightweight and optimized for an easy integration into your system. We offer

  1. the XSW-Series, a series of TE1 stabilized SWIR modules
  2. the XTM-Series, a series of uncooled thermal (LWIR) infrared modules
  3. the XCO-640, a Stirling cooled MWIR module optimized for long range thermal surveillance

What features are needed?

  • Easy connectivity
We offer standard digital or analog interfaces for easy integration, operation and maintenance
  • Lightweight and compact design
A crucial point for all airborne payloads. Our XenicsCores are very light and extremely compact
  • Superior image quality
Our cameras are equipped with several image enhancement algorithms. This results in a superior image

Application notes
Advanced IR and visual cameras mounted on gimbals for aircraft operation Advanced IR and visual cameras jointly mounted on four-axis gyro-stabilized gimbal for aircraft operation.
Surveillance, safety & security industry Xenics offers world-leading innovation with durable infrared modules and cameras for system integrators within the security industry. Our advanced Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) cameras look through fog, haze, smoke and can identify humans or objects during night and day, whereas thermal imaging cameras can detect at very long distance and at pitch dark.

Versatile infrared analysis and reporting software

The Xeneth user interface is common to all the Xenics cameras. This makes it easy for customers to apply their familiarity with this comprehensive product to any new applications, covering wide ranging capabilities in various parts of the IR spectrum.

Learn it once and apply it over and over again.
